Understanding AI in simple terms!
Artificial Intelligence refers to any machine that evinces attributes related to human intelligence such as problem-solving, performing given tasks, and learning. The major characteristics involve thinking, processing, and copying human actions. However, the ability to vindicate and take action accordingly to achieve a specific goal is one of the major traits of artificial intelligence.
As a human being, the very first thing that appears to one’s mind when hearing the word artificial intelligence is a ROBOT. That is because of the influence of movies and science-fiction novels that had made people believe that only one machine can compete with the human mind or even surpass it and that is a working Robot. But as technology advances and people are becoming more and more aware, the previous definition became outdated. Artificial intelligence in today’s time is continuously evolving and expanding itself to benefit different industries.
The various subfield that is included in the field of artificial intelligence is based on different aspects, which are:
- technical consideration, such as machine learning, robotics
- using particular tools, like artificial neural networks and logics
- Philosophical differences
Are there any problems associated with AI?
The problems associated with Artificial Intelligence include knowledge representation, learning, perception, reasoning, planning, and language processing and others include the ability to transfer and manipulate objects. The different approaches and methods that are used to achieve a solution to these problems include computational intelligence, statistical methods, and traditional symbolic Artificial Intelligence. Artificial intelligence encompasses various fields within itself to be able to simulate human intelligence which includes information engineering, psychology, computer science, philosophy, mathematics, linguistics, and many more. No doubt that advancement in artificial intelligence have made the working easier leaving no room for mistakes but there are several cons associated with it which according to some people includes the risk of mass unemployment as people will switch to working machines as they are cost-effective.
The major role in structuring artificial intelligence is of algorithms. The uses of algorithms differ based on the complexity level of artificial intelligence. These are explicit instructions that are executed by computers. The artificial intelligence algorithms are capable to learn from the data and enhance their working by opting new strategies or can develop new algorithms.
Applications of Artificial Intelligence
The applications and uses of artificial intelligence are endless. The advance technology can be applied and used in different sectors and fields such as the medical field for different treatments and surgical procedures. The other examples include gaming in the computer where the person chooses to compete against the computer, for self-driving cars. The other sectors includes financial industry for banking and accounting data. This has made the supply, demand and pricing securities easier to estimate.
The different areas of practical application that uses artificial intelligence in a broader sense are as follows:
Marketing– To use artificial intelligence to predict customers’ behaviours’ and to develop customized promotion strategies to target them
Banking– Banks are using AI-based systems to provide customer support, detect credit card frauds and anomalies. Using artificial intelligence in detecting fraud and taking preventive measures, artificial intelligence systems are providing solutions and enhancing security.
Finance– Ventures rely on the computer and data scientists to calculate the pattern of the future market. The trading depends on the possibility of an increase in the demand to increase profit in the future. To be able to use the previous year’s data and pattern followed, computers use different artificial intelligence systems to crunch ample amount of data and to predict the future accurately in the short amount of time possible.
Agriculture– The environmental issues like population change, climate change and food security concerns have pressurized the society to develop innovative methods to improve land fertility and crop yield. The researchers have developed automation and other AI system to help the farmers to get more from the land and to effectively use these systems to protect their crops.
Space exploration– The scientists use artificial intelligence to analyse the vast amount of data discovered to get to a point.
Autonomous vehicles– The artificial intelligence systems in the autonomous vehicles collects data from the cameras, GPS, cloud service and the vehicle radar to produce control signals that will help to operate the vehicle.
Chatbots– One of the common and the most popular technology used in every household – virtual assistant. These systems include the AI function to translate human language into action. These devices use NLP and human speech recognition to perform a variety of functions.
Social Media– To generate an inestimable amount of data that uses machines learning and artificial intelligence.
Government and military– Artificial intelligence applications paired with facial recognition systems are used for mass surveillance. The military is developing AI applications and machine learning to enhance sensors, interoperability, C2, etc.
Healthcare– Artificial intelligence has found numerous applications in the healthcare industry. One significant area is the application of AI in diagnostic tools that are capable of analyzing vast amounts of data and medical images to help doctors with diagnosing diseases more accurately and at an earlier stage. Types Of Artificial Intelligence You Should Know!
Reactive machines– These are one of the most former forms of artificial intelligence which have limited capability. These machines are not based or includes memory-based functionality rather copies human’s mind actions to respond to the given task or function. This clearly states that these machines do not possess the ability to learn from past experiences and working to perform in the future. These only respond to the given inputs.
Limited memory– These machines incorporate the abilities of reactive machines with the advancement of learning from the previous performance that helps in making decisions.
All artificial intelligence systems are included in this category.
Theory of mind– This can be categorized as a work in progress. Researchers are currently working on developing this artificial intelligence system. The innovative characteristics that would be encompassed in the theory of mind AI will help in better understanding the entities it is dealing with that includes emotions, needs, thoughts and beliefs. With the development of the theory of mind AI, it will be easier for the machines to contact, communicate and understand humans.
Self-awareness– The end-stage of artificial intelligence development. This system will not only be able to understand humans but will have its own potential and desires of its own. Though developing this type of self-aware system will magnify our advancement as a civilization by giant strides but it can potentially turn into a disaster. Because once the machines develop self-awareness will be capable to generate ideas of preserving itself or to take over humans that will lead to the destruction of humanity.
